Somewhere around the fourth why, the cause turns out to have been in plain sight the whole time.
Some defects genuinely do hide well: they reproduce only under load, vanish when logging is switched on and behave differently on the one machine nobody uses. The cause that takes four days to find is usually small enough to have survived every code review, every test run and every skim of the diff. Debugging veterans read this shirt as praise for the bug rather than a complaint about the week.
