Skip intro (and small talk) borrows the button Netflix rolled out in 2017, which jumps past a series' opening credits straight to the episode. Small talk is the conversational version of the credits, and it has a name in linguistics: Bronisław Malinowski called it phatic communion in 1923, talk whose job is to build a connection rather than pass on information. The shirt asks for the button anyway.
Streaming platforms solved a problem social convention has not: the weather, the weekend and the how are yous still cannot be compressed into a single click. Engineers whose calendar is a wall of meetings develop this preference early, since the useful part of most conversations is four sentences long. Worn to the office, the t-shirt counts as advance notice rather than rudeness.
