The Domain Name System turns names into addresses, so nearly every request passes through it before anything else happens, which makes it both the reason the site loads and the cause of the outage. Paul Mockapetris specified it in 1983, and engineers have been checking it last ever since.
The ticket said latency, the monitoring showed dropped packets, and the postmortem found a misconfigured TTL that had been wrong for four months.
