Code like nobody's reviewing rewrites dance like nobody's watching, a line often attributed to Mark Twain and usually traced to Come From the Heart, a country song by Susanna Clark and Richard Leigh. The original is about doing something without worrying who's looking. In code, the one looking is the reviewer, and the 1 AM version of you has stopped worrying.
There's a version of your code that exists when a senior engineer is watching, and a version that exists at 1 AM when you just need the thing to work. The 1 AM version uses global variables, ignores error handling and has a comment that says fix later. The tests pass, the feature works, and the commit message can stay cryptic.
