499 Client Closed Request
HTTP 499 Client Closed Request is a non-standard status code from nginx. It is logged when the client closes the connection before the server has sent its response, usually because a tab was closed, a user gave up or a timeout further up the chain ran out first. No client ever receives a 499; it exists only in the server's access log, which is where developers meet it.
The request was fine and the server was working; the client just decided it was done waiting. For backend developers who've debugged 499s at scale and know the particular frustration of a problem that isn't technically yours to fix. The usual suspects are a slow upstream and an impatient load balancer.
