Rage Against The Hype Machine
Rage against the hype machine borrows the name of the Los Angeles band Rage Against the Machine and points it at the marketing that surrounds every new technology. Gartner has charted the pattern since 1995 as the Hype Cycle: an innovation trigger, a peak of inflated expectations, a trough of disillusionment, and only then a slope of enlightenment and a plateau of productivity. Gartner's 2025 Hype Cycle for AI put generative AI in the trough, where many engineers had been standing for a while.
Engineers sit through the demo built on one cherry-picked output and the roadmap that renames every feature as AI-powered. The rage is not against the technology, which they use every day, but against the volume of the announcements. The shirt is for anyone who ships real software and has been told that this quarter's launch changes everything, again.
