Programming is thinking, not typing is a line often said among developers, usually to someone counting commits. Most of the work in software happens before the code: understanding the problem, choosing the structure, working out why the logic fails. Edsger Dijkstra argued in 1988 that lines of code should be counted as lines spent rather than lines produced, which makes the fastest typist the biggest spender.
