Dark Mode Since Before It Was Cool
Dark mode since before it was cool is the hipster's boast about liking a band before anyone else did, applied to the editor theme. Terminals and early PCs showed light text on a dark screen for decades; it was the desktop interfaces of Xerox PARC and the 1984 Macintosh that put dark text on a bright background to imitate paper. For terminal users, the dark mode toggle that arrived much later was a return to the default.
For programmers who were configuring dark themes in Vim and Emacs long before dark mode became a marketing feature. It is for flexing terminal-veteran credentials, or admitting you've been coding in dark rooms for decades. The rest of the industry caught up eventually.
